Rancho Camulos, a working ranch from the mid-1800s east of Piru, has been designated as a national historic landmark, officials said Thursday.
The ranch off Highway 126 gained national historic landmark status this week, county Supervisor Kathy Long said. She hopes the status will bring more tourists to the Heritage Valley.
The Santa Clara River Valley is trying to reinvent itself as a center for historical tourism. The area, now dubbed Heritage Valley, has vintage airplanes, historical buildings and dining aboard trains.
Orange and avocado groves surround the adobe barn, schoolhouse and chapel of Rancho Camulos. The ranch's buildings were damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The national landmark status makes Rancho Camulos eligible for more funding, Long said.
It took six years to win the designation for Rancho Camulos, Long said.
