HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NOVELA - DOES NOT CONTAIN THE ENDING

Alondra is a bright, fearless young woman. Her mother was an entertainer and died when she was young (at birth?). Her father loves her dearly. When she leaves her boarding school, she goes to live with her aunt who hates her. Her aunt has a timid daughter name Maria Luisa, who loves and is loved by Alondra. She wants her son to be a priest, but he drinks, is a womanizer, and lies. She wants her daughter Maria Luisa to be a nun (I think). Neither child wants to do what their mother wants. For some reason, Alondra goes to live in town with her aunt rather than to her father’s ranch in the country. The aunt hates her. Eventually, the aunt’s son gets kicked out of school and returns home. He and his mother try to arrange a marriage for Alondra with a rich old man so they can partake of his fortune. A dying singer comes to town and befriends Alondra but one of the singer’s new friends, an old lecher, tries to take advantage of her. Alondra escapes, but her aunt locks her out of the house. She gets away with the singer’s help, but on her way to her father’s, she gets off at the wrong train station, and then somehow loses her guide or her horse or something. In the mountains, she meets Bruno and, after several adventures (he loses his horse saving her), they become lovers. When she discovers he is married and has children, she leaves him.

Back in town, the timid Maria Luisa has met a soldier, Raúl and, in spite of her being this incredibly timid, frightened, cloistered girl, becomes his lover. He leaves, promising to return but still hasn’t when she realizes she is pregnant. (I think he sent a letter but her aunt never gave it to her.) Maria Louisa’s brother, meanwhile, has ended up in jail for fraud and theft associated with the old man who wanted to marry Alondra. The oh-so-correct aunt is thus doubly shamed. Alondra and Maria Luisa escape to Mexico where they take refuge in the home of a lovely old couple, Rosita and Alfredo, and set up a flower shop. Alfredo is shocked when he realizes Maria Luisa is pregnant but his wife convinces him to let her stay. One way and another, Cristina (Bruno’s wife) and Alondra meet although Cristina doesn’t know who she is and Alondra doesn’t at first realize who Cristina is. (Cristina is an older woman with a slight heart condition.) Somewhere around this time, Alondra visits her father and, eventually, discovers that Carmelina, his father’s housekeeper, has also been his lover and is pregnant. Carmelina is a lovely woman and she does finally marry Alondra’s father and has a son...soon after which he dies.

In the shop, Alondra meets Carlos and he falls in love with her immediately. Eventually he convinces her to marry him (although Bruno tries to prevent it), but he has hidden several secrets from her: he has two mentally ill siblings, is sterile, and when he drinks too much he can’t remember what he does. She survives the discovery of his siblings, but leaves him on learning he is sterile. He goes on a drunk and is arrested for stealing jewelry and murdering the shop owner; he does have possession of one of the jewels (I think) but doesn’t know how he got it. He doesn’t tell Alondra. Instead, he takes her on a trip to Spain. On the boat, he becomes friends with the captain and eventually explains his situation. As it happens, Bruno (leaving a pregnant wife behind) and his friend are taking the same boat and eventually they meet. (Bruno had decided to relocate to Spain to forget Alondra.) Carlos, in essence, gives Alondra into Bruno’s care. He allows himself to be taken by the police and has the captain explain the situation to Alondra afterwards. She tries to go it alone in Spain but eventually becomes Bruno’s lover again. Her only other friend in Spain is Jovita. She is very happy with Bruno, becomes pregnant and gives birth. Cristina and the children come to Spain. Bruno has a heart attack and is hospitalized. (Alondra has no idea why Bruno has seemed to desert her.) Cristina, having long suspected her husband was in love with another woman, seeks out Bruno’s lover because Bruno needs her. Cristina is surprised to discover the woman in question is Alondra. Alondra explains how it all happened. She promises Cristina she will leave Bruno if he survives and visits him in the hospital. Cristina doesn’t quite believe her and, after Bruno is discharged, goes away with the children.
