. Rinconlatino: Article about
"Camila" by Robyn Barnette
Here's an article I wrote about "Camila" back in September
of 1998. This article can be found on my website, but it is being reprinted
here: "Camila" Televisa
presents a classic, romantic, and sweet novela that marks the return of Bibi
Gaytan and Eduardo Capetillo By: Robyn
Barnette (Fuente: El Espectro, Robyn B. OnLiNE Derechos Reservados
MCMXCVIII) MEXICO, D.F.—After the
success of "Sin Tí" (Without You), the telenovela that marked the
return of Gabriela Rivero and the debut of Puerto Rican actress Adamari López,
producer Angelli Nesma Medina is using the same formula to mark the return of
another actress, Bibi Gaytán, with her newest production "Camila".
The telenovela makes its premiere on September 14th on Canal 2, Televisa's
"El Canal de las Estrellas."
Medina is counting on a sweet, classic, and romantic story with this
production. It's these kinds of stories that please the audience, and therefore
work very well. "For us, we dedicate ourselves to do melodramas,"
said Medina. "It's what counts."
In an interview, Medina argues that "Camila" is not a remake
of "Viviana," a novela in the late 1970s that starred Lucia
Méndez. "A lot has been handled
that we are doing a remake of 'Viviana', but it is not certain. The only thing
both have in common is bigamy."
Medina also added that the novela, where the public will witness the
slippings of one woman married to a younger man, is based on a script written
by Ines Rodena. And she affirmed that "Camila" has much more present
and strong themes dealing with bigamy.
"Bigamy is a problem that always exists and has existed with that
from the small house and the big house. Here we will deal with it in a subtle
way and to see how it affects the public." With respect to the number of episodes that will conform the new
novela, Medina mentioned that they predicted about 160 1-hour episodes,
although Televisa hinted that it would extend to 200. However, she clarified
that the number is not definite, "Because it will depend on the reaction
of this production from the audience, who is and will always have the last
word." Among the actors and
actresses included in the cast of "Camila" include Adamari López,
Gabriela Goldsmith, and Enrique Lizalde.
About the reasons for which she decided to substitute the actor René
Casados by Enrique Lizalde, when the host of "Picardia Mexicana"
(Mexican Roguery) had already recorded 47 chapters of "Camila," Nesma
clarified that it was an agreement between both he and the company. "René has many work commitments and the
truth is that I could not risk that I not arrive to their calls, so that in
common agreement with Televisa, we decided that the best thing was to
substitute him." Medina also
assured that Bibi Gaytán and Eduardo Capetillo are for sure a contributing
factor for success with this telenovela, because "The audience was hoping
for it." Finally, Medina affirmed
that with "Camila," her challenge as a producer will not only attain
a good rating, but also improve the levels reached on the novelas that she has
produced throughout her career.
Rinconlatino, 5/4/99:
I saw some of it and... (Is not the ending, but enough info. to know how it
will end). by Rafa Hi Jennifer! CAMILA is a relly waste of time
is a cheap production with everything bad. Bibi Gaytan as a sexy indian (that´s
the better way to describer her role) and her husband Eduardo Capetillo (worst
as always, the same stupid face when happy as when he´s sad). The same plot, the indian girl who marries
the rich guy. The rich guy works as a lawyer in Mexico City and when he comes
to the city (they got marry in her town) he has to "take care" of
Mónica (his boss daughter who was away - Adamari López). The bull is that he
has to marry Mónica and he does and then he has two wifes, Camila and Mónica.
But Mónica is a very bad girl who only likes his as a object (lust him). Then
Camila is having a baby, then she works as a beutician in a beutyshop. Then,
because he wants to divorce Mónica (because she´s cheating on him) and her
father kick him out of his law office and try to mess up his career as a
lawyer. Then he decided to go to the US as an illegal, where he gets hurt and a
woman helps him and kidnap him in her wood house (SO STUPID). Well, so Camila sends a friend to go for
him to the States, he finds him but he thinks Camila´s husband is having an
affair with this lady and he comes back to Mexico and tells Camila that her
husband died in the desert (Again, how stupid!). So Camila is crying and crying
and crying (like Duracell, jajajajajaja), and decided to keep her husband
memory for ever, without marring this guy who really loves her. Then, Mónica tries to kill Camila a couple
of times, because she hates her. Her husband comes back to Mexico and tries to
get Camila´s love back. Camila was in the hospital because Mónica tried to kill
her. When he gets back to Mexico finds Camila in a hospital very hurt. After
that, a doctor gets in love with Camila and a nurse tries to get her husband
lying about having a son with him. She hipnotized him and make him believe
she´s having a baby (she´s lying with false documents she created
herself). Well, well, well... I didn´t
saw it everyday, but the couple of days I saw it, it was a shame. I used to see
couple of things on tv at the same time and CAMILA was one of those
things. The best was Adamari, as always
as the bad girl she was great. I won´t
tell the end (you can imagine it so easily) but after this sinopsis... do you
believe CAMILA deserves a Prime Time Hour in Univisión??? This novela was so
bad it was about 2.5 months long because it low rating (even though Televisa
says it has a good one)...
