SYNOPSIS

Cañaveral de Pasiones

http://www.esmas.com/canal2/notas/674049.html

Twelve years later, Pablo returns home to introduce his fiancée, a material and superficial young woman. An encounter with his childhood friend leaves him dumbstruck: Julia has become a beautiful, rebellious woman, but with a very bad reputation. Despite this, very adult feelings surge between them, but to be together they must battle the lies and hatreds that have torn their families apart for a generation.

SUMMARY OF NOVELA FROM 1997 UNIVISION BROADCAST

Brief Summaries from Univision broadcast 1996-1997

     Type: typical but well done

     Place:  San Benito.

Three distinct sections: the first is short and puts in place the central lies. The second is when the truth comes out but not completely enough. A weak, tormented man dies at the hands of the woman responsible for his torment. The third is the major part of the novela.

Characters:  Fausto Santos and his wife Margarita, parents of Julia. They own a plantation. Dinora is Margarita’s sister. She lives with them and, after Margarita’s death, marries Fausto. She is one of the villains, as are Josefina and Rufino. Almador and Josefina Montero and their son Pablo. They own some kind of manufacturing company. Don Samuel, Rufino Mendoza, Girardo, and Vicente all work for Fausto. Don Samuel (Nino to Julia) is a good man, older, married to Amalia (who is killed accidentally ---the target was Don Samuel---by Rufino’s henchman early in the series). Rufino is the bad man who wants, and gets, Don Samuel’s job. Juan de Dios is an orphan being raised by Padre Cuco (Refugio-brother of Josefina) and being supported in part by Almodar (without Josefina’s knowledge). Remedios is known as a witch; she is raising her granddaughter Mireya. I think her daughter is dead and that Rufino is the father. Remedios has apparently never told Mireya anything about her parents. Alejandro Cisneros is a doctor; his wife is Ilda? (Belinda? Inda? not sure of name); they have a son Enrique and a daughter ____. Ilda is Josefina’s best friend and a huge gossip. Chaya works for Almador and Josefina. Carlota is the secretary in the Montero business. Rafael ? is somehow related to Josefina. He has two children: Gina and Guillermo.

Although Dinora loves Fausto, she and Almador are lovers. Josefina suspects Almador has a lover but thinks it is Margarita and tells Fausto so. (At one time, Almador was indeed in love with Margarita; she choose Fausto, but he has never been sure of her love----although she is obviously a good and honorable woman). Dinora, after failing to seduce Fausto (and being told by him to leave the house), convinces Almador to run away with her. She had discovered she was pregnant (and had begged Dr. Cisneros not to tell anybody). Margarita discovers the plan and locks Dinora in her room; she goes after Almador, gets in his car and tries to talk him out of it. It is raining. Almador, turns the car around, drives very fast and it crashes. He is killed instantly. Remedios hears Margarita’s last words “tuve que deternerlos” and tells Refugio but nobody else (or there would be no story). Meanwhile, Josefina (who found the receipt for two airline tickets, minus names) tells Fausto his wife and her husband are running away. Fausto discovers the locked-up Dinora and goes after Margarita. Dinora didn’t directly tell Josefina that Margarita was running away with Almador but implied it. When Fausto discovers the dead Margarita, he never notices that the car is going in the wrong direction, that there is no luggage, that all her clothes are in her closet. He assumes the worst. [Rufino gets the tickets out of the dead Almador’s suitcase and hides them.] Both Don Samuel and Prudencia notice things like the clothes, lack of a suitcase, etc. and believe Margarita is innocent but they never tell anybody or go that one step further to suggest it was Dinora. Refugio knows Dinora and Almador were lovers. Unfortunately, when Dinora suspected that Refugio knew about them, she made a point of confessing the sin so Refugio could never tell anybody.

Then Dinora suggests that Julia is not really his daughter and succeeds in seducing him. They marry. Chasing after Julia one day, Dinora (who hates her) falls down the stairs and goes into labor. While unconscious, she says something like “it’s yours Almador” which Fausto hears but she later explains it away (another telenovela convention: he believes her as he never believed his wife). Dinora gets Dr. Cisneros to promise not to mention that the baby is premature...to avoid any more gossip. Cisneros agrees; he assumes the child is Fausto’s. But while Julia is in the room with the baby, and Dinora is in the bathroom, her baby dies. Crib death. Dinora blames Julia. Then Josefina tells her she can’t have any more children (which she learned from Ilda who heard it from her husband.) Rufino tells Fausto that the child wasn’t his but doesn’t say who the father was; Fausto doesn’t believe him; Dinora tries to kill Rufino but fails. Fausto and Josefina break off all relations with each other, personal and business. Josefina sends Pablo away to school so he won’t be contaminated by Julia. The last thing Pablo does is give Julia a necklace. Josefina refuses to continue Almador’s support for Juan de Dios so he starts working for Fausto. Girardo, who had been attracted to Dinora, resigns when Fausto marries Dinora (since Fausto knew of the attraction). Prudencia refuses to marry Vicente because she believes she must stay with Julia since her father has rejected her.  Josefina dismisses Don Samuel and gives his job to Rufino. Then she has Rufino burn the Santos lands that had belonged to Margarita.

TEN YEARS LATER. The children are grown. Vicente has married Chaya and has a son. Fausto drinks too much. Juan de Dios still works for Fausto. Fausto has remained estranged from his daughter and Julia and Dinora hate each other. Thanks to Josefina and Dinora, Julia has few friends and a bad reputation (“like her mother”). Dinora and Fausto don’t appear to be happy. We meet Enrique for the first time, a disagreeable fellow. Rufino won’t give him a job until Ilda, against the wishes of Alejandro, gets Josefina to intercede. Prudencia still works for Fausto and cares for Julia (as does Alma). Pablo has been in Mexico the entire time. The first person he sees when he comes home is Julia, but he doesn’t recognize her. He tells his mother he is engaged to Gina, Rafael’s daughter, and that he does not plan to take up his father’s position as head of the company. She is pleased about the former, but not the later. Guillermo is dishonest (he even steals from his sister) and a womanizer. Gina wants Pablo mainly for his money.

Julia confronts her father about his attitude toward her and Dinora says if he doesn’t tell her she will. He says it’s just because she reminds him of Margarita. In private, he forbids Dinora to tell her the “truth” because he is not sure it is the truth. Dinora makes an appointment with Rufino, not sure why, and Fausto finds them together but she passes it off as some kind of business deal. He believes her but reminds her that he wants nothing to do with Josefina, although his business is suffering. Indeed, he’s losing a major customer because he refuses to farm Margarita’s lands.

Pablo and Julia make up. Josefina becomes aware of the friendship. She tells Julia to stop and slaps her; Fausto, on seeing Julia with Pablo, tells Pablo the same. Then Josefina invites Gina and Guillermo to visit and arranges for a fiesta to announce the marriage. At home, Guillermo’s latest conquest has told his father that she is pregnant. Guillermo denies it. The relationship between Pablo and Juan de Dios (who loves Julia) remains very cool. [it’s obvious that Julia loves Pablo and Mireya loves Juan de Dios. no doubt at some point Julia and Pablo will learn that they may be step-siblings]. Fausto admits to Alejandro that he has never loved Dinora and she overhears the conversation. She decides to make him jealous, visits Dr. Cisneros and begins a very artful seduction (asking pardon, expressing shame, etc. for kissing him) of him who, for some reason, has always believed she was some delicate, wonderful person. Dinora is very pleased with herself.

Guillermo wants Julia (I sure hope they don’t let him rape her) and taunts Gina with his comments about her. Dinora pretends she has something wrong with her and gains Julia’s sympathy. Her father tells her to leave the house because she won’t let him sell her mother’s land. Pablo visits his uncle and he and Juan de Dios share old memories and Pablo asks him how he feels about Julia. He says Julia thinks of him as an older brother. Gina sees Pablo comforting Julia. Julia seeks refuge with Don Samuel y Amalia. Fausto and Juan de Dios fight over the land and Julia; Juan de Dios resigns. He finally tells Julia he loves her and she, of course, is surprised. Fausto finds Alejandro coming out of Dinora’s bedroom but, of course, accepts the medical explanation.

Chayo won’t let her son Juanito accept a gift from Prudencia; she must still be jealous because her husband loved Pru first. Fausto sees Dr. Cisneros come out of Dinora’s bedroom but accepts the explanation that Dinora may be very ill. Julia admits to Mireya that she loves Pablo; Juan de Dios admits to Julia that he loves her.      Socorro Carasco, the mother of Juan de Dios returns. Dinora implies to Guillermo that Julia is a loose woman and encourages him to find out for himself. Rufino beats up Don Samuel so badly he ends up in the hospital; Josefina tells Rufino to tell the world that Julia made a pass at him and when Don Samuel appeared pretended that he was molesting her which, indeed, he was. Rufino orders ? to kill Don Samuel; he burns the shop and kills Don Samuel’s wife Amalia. Dinora overhears Rufino yelling at ? for killing the wrong person but, of course, she won’t tell anybody the truth; she’ll just use it for blackmail. When Don Samuel learns the fire was set deliberately, he accuses Rufino of murder at the funeral.

Juan de Dios discovers that Socorro is his mother but doesn’t want to believe it. The padre tells him that his father is truly dead and he asks Socorro who he was. She doesn’t say but it was Almador and Josefina has always known it. She paid Socorro to leave but now Socorro wants more money and if Josefina says no, says she will tell Juan de Dios. Refugio also knows the truth, but he learned it via confession. (This explains Almador’s affection and financial support as well as Josefina’s hatred. He didn’t know that she knew.)  Socorro has something to do with Rufino. Gina has an accident and pretends to be paralyzed so Pablo will return with her to Mexico, to get him away from Julia. (Gina wants to marry Pablo but she wants Enrique.) Josefina discovers the truth and is furious because she didn’t have the wits to tell her and ask advice; Josefina tells Gina she’s not sure she’s the right woman for Pablo, that she lacks what it takes to be his wife. Guillermo has transferred his affections to Dinora (they become lovers) and agrees to help her destroy Julia. Refugio seems to be ailing. Josefina tells Rufino to get rid of Socorro, who wants more money. Socorro tells Rufino part of the truth, that she was Almador’s lover after he married Josefina, but not that her son if Juan de Dios (although it’s hard to believe Rufino doesn’t know that).  He eventually discovers it.

Pablo and Julia decide to marry. At the civil wedding, Fausto shoots Pablo. In exchange for the money needed to get him out of jail, Julia gives Josefina her lands as collateral and promises to separate herself from Pablo but not to tell him. He eventually learns the truth, confronts his mother, and leaves the house. He and Julia get back together. Juan de Dios decides to give Mireya a chance to win his love but she remains jealous of Julia.

Pablo and Julia tell Fausto they’re going to marry and Dinora tells them that she’s Almador’s daughter, that Margarita herself confessed it to her and Fausto backs her up. Josefina tells Pablo it’s possible although she knows it isn’t true. Dinora gets Leopoldo to steal the tickets from Rufino; he does, and takes Margarita’s necklace as well. Rufino catches him and retrieves the tickets. Padre Refugio tells Dinora she’s gone too far, that he will break his vows if he must. Just as he is about to confront Fausto, Dinora admits to Fausto that she lied about Julia not being his daughter (although she later tells him that the “possibility exists”). It’s not the whole truth, but it satisfies Refugio for the moment. Fausto begs Julia’s pardon. Dinora turns on the tears and also asks Julia’s pardon. Fausto tells Julia he will accept Pablo if she decides to marry him but he warns her not to because of Josefina’s opposition. Prudencia agrees to marry Leopoldo. (She doesn’t know he murdered Don Samuel’s wife.)

Guillermo fixes his eyes on Ilda’s daughter. Juan de Dios tells Mireya he can’t love her and that they must stop trying.  Julia goes to Pablo’s office to tell him they’re not siblings and finds him kissing Gina; he had just asked her to marry him. Rafael asks Josefina to marry him; she says no: Almador was her one and only love. (It’s really curious that she has never blamed him for his infidelity although she hates Fausto and Julia.)

Pablo and Gina make love and she, no doubt, will become pregnant. Fausto finally learns the truth about Dinora and Almador, from a combination of Remedios, the doctor, and Rufino. Dinora admits it. They fight. He taunts her; she kills him, cleans up, and flees (Juan de Dios sees her leave the house) to Ilda’s house. She says she hasn’t seen Fausto since the morning. Prudencia calls Don Samuel. Nobody suspects Dinora. They assume he committed suicide!

Rufino and Socorro try to kill Josefina, but they must flee when Guillermo arrives home. Dinora visits Refugio’s superior and arranges to have Refugio sent away. Refugio accuses Dinora of killing Fausto and tells her he was not the one who told Fausto the truth. Josefina tells Pablo that Julia tried to kill her.

Mireya is pregnant by Juan de Diós. He doesn’t know. Meanwhile, Julia and Juan de Diós have decided to marry. Leticia is pregnant with Guillermo’s child.

     Ultimos Capitulos (Last two weeks):

Pablo leaves Gina at the altar and Julia, on horseback and at gunpoint, stops Julia from marrying Pablo. Josefina leaves it to Rafael to explain to the guests. Pablo and Julia finally make love and return. Juan de Diós is furious. Rafael, Gina and Guillermo plan to leave. Dinora and Rufino plan something against Julia. (Socorro left? anyways, Rufino and Dinora have become lovers). Padre Refugio stops Juan de Diós from killing Pablo by shouting that they are brothers. Fue un secreto de confesión; Almador nunca lo supe. Juan de Diós no lo cree. El pide a Rufino where his mother is. Rufino no dice nada. Pablo confronts his mother. She says she never knew for sure but assumed it was so because Socorro y Almador were lovers as well as the age of the child, Almador’s insistence that the two boys be together. Pablo tells her he will never forgive her. Nino y Prudencia learn from Leopoldo that Rufino ordered the burning of Amalia’s store but it isn’t proof because it would be just his word and Rufino threatened Leopoldo with harm to Prudencia. Guillermo tries to rape Leticia, but her father and the police arrive in time. He’s put in jail and Rafael refuses to get him out. Gina tries to make up with Enrique but he thanks her for teaching him that “not all that glitters is gold”. Pablo gives up Julia. Refugio goes to his Bishop and confesses, although he doesn’t explain the circumstances. He is sent away to a retreat. Dr. Cisneros reconciles with his wife. Mireya sees Rufino in the woods; then Remedios finds a body there, Socorro’s; Mireya returns to the site for some reason and sees Rufino. He tells her she shouldn’t say anything about his being there before because he is her father. Remedios admits to Mireya that is the truth. Later that night, Rufino tries to run down Julia with his car, but Mireya pushes her out of the way and is hurt instead.

Mireya loses her baby and Julia tells Juan de Dios she was pregnant with his son. He tells the police Rufino was probably responsible for the death of his mother and for Mireya’s injury. When the police search Rufino’s home, they find the two airline tickets from 10 years before (with the names of Almador and Dinora). They give the tickets to Josefina who cannot believe them. She assumes that Margarita got the ticket under Dinora’s name, but she shows them to Pablo who understands at once. He shows them to Julia and together they go to see Remedios. She finally tells them what she told Julia’s father, about Dinora’s pregnancy and Margarita’s last words, and about her suspicion that Dinora killed Fausto. Julia confronts Dinora with everything and, for some odd reason, Dinora begs Julia to believe that Fausto is the only man she ever loved. Pablo tells Josefina what he learned from Remedios. She goes to see Dinora and finds Rufino in the house; he admits the truth and tries to take advantage of her but she stabs him with a letter opener and gets away. Nino and Carlota get together.

Penultimate episode:     Rufino flees and tells Dinora to meet him. She does. On a dark and rainy night. And, again, Remedios sees the truck. To prevent their escape, she sends her horse and cart into the truck’s path. It turns over and both Dinora and Rufino are injured. He runs away. Juan de Dios, Pablo and Nino go after him, find him, beat him up but turn him over to the police. Dinora is taken to the hospital. Josefina, convinced now of the truth and of the harm she has done, once again (as ten years previously, after Dinora’s baby died), visits Dinora in the hospital and tells her she’ll never be the same woman she was. Dinora discovers she has lost a leg. Julia visits Dinora who tells her that she has always hated her because she was the fruit of the love between her sister and Fausto. She says that the irony of her life was to have killed the only man she ever loved. Then she dies (having slashed her wrists with a scissors).

El Gran Final: Rufino is jailed for life. Enrique is attracted to his father’s new secretary. His sister is also interested in somebody new, but it isn’t serious. All of a sudden, Juan de Dios realizes he loves Mireya and asks her to marry him. Julia gives her father’s fields to Juan de Dios. Josefina asks Julia’s pardon and at her wedding to Pablo publicly apologizes for her years-long calumnies against Margarita. Padre Cuco turns up to perform the wedding ceremony.
