summaries
In the first week,
we meet the major characters. Maria Inés and Ignacio have 3 children, almost
adults: Móncia, Adriana y Andrés. The family is not the happiest. The kids
argue a lot. Ignacio opposes his son’s interest in music. Mónica is bulimic;
her mother notices that she seems thin but that’s all. Adriana is studying to
be a lawyer and join her father. Nicolas is her boyfriend and lover. Ignacio is
having an affair with Daniela, a woman of about 30 who is a successful lawyer.
Mónica suspects the affair, especially when she overhears a telephone
conversation between her father and Daniela; she fears that her father will
leave and blames her mother. Paulina is a twice-divorced woman, left both times
for a younger woman, who is celebrating her 45th birthday. She, Maria Inés and
Rosario are good friends. Rosario’s husband Francisco works with Ignacio and
knows about Daniela; he meets her at the end of the first week and discovers
that the affair is serious. Paulina sees Ignacio kissing a woman in the airport
and tells Rosario and Maria Inés. The latter questions Ignacio, but he tells
her it was just some business acquaintance he bumped into. Rosario doesn’t tell
her what she knows. Daniela wants Ignacio to divorce his wife; he says it is
not that easy although he hasn’t made love to his wife more than once or twice
in the past couple of years. Alejandro is a friend of Paulina’s and sees Maria
Inés for the first time when she attends a club where her son is playing.
Ignacio admits to
Maria Inés that he had a 2-yr. affair but has ended it. Alejandro publishes
comments Ignacio made to Maria Inés that she reported to him at a party given
by Paulina. Ignacio is furious and so is Maria Inés. She berates him and won’t
let him explain. Then Ignacio tells Maria Inés he can’t give up his lover. He
leaves the house. Mónica and Ariana blame her. Only Andrés offers her support.
Adriana thinks she is pregnant. She and
Nicolas argue about her having an abortion (her idea). Mónica runs away to the
house in Cuernavaca. Maria Inés chases after her with the help of Alejandro who
has told his neighbor that he thinks he is falling in love with Maria Inés. At
the house in Cuernavaca, Alejandro kisses Maria Inés.
Ignacio takes Daniela with him to Francisco’s
home, where Maria Inés finds them. Alejandro and Maria Inés begin to date.
Mónica is furious. Mamalena tries to buy off Alejandro, then threatens his
career. Andrés y Paulina hacen el amor. Es el primer tiempo por Andrés. At the
same time, Maria Inés begins to wonder if her son is homosexual because he
seems to have no girlfriends. Adriana decides to have the baby. Her father is
furious; her mother is pleased to become a grandmother. Mamalena believes it is
yet another example of Maria Ines’s failure as wife and mother. Marcos slaps
Paulina. Mónica confronts Daniela in her office during a meeting.
Mónica gets
arrested and continues to be a pain. Adriana and Nicolas plan a quick wedding.
Ignacio blames Maria Inés for the family problems. She throws his clothes out
and tells him to get out of her life. She won’t admit she loves Alejandro but
does call him a friend.
Marcella dice a
Rosario dice
a sus amigas que tiene cáncer. Tiene que tener un mastéctomo. Paulina gets
books on the subject, giving them to Rosario and Maria Inés: to win the battle,
you must know your enemy.
Francisco suggests that he consider returning to Maria Inés.
Rosario has
surgery. Marcos beats up Paulina. Andrés gets his own apartment and a new
girlfriend. Mónica moves in with her abuella. The relationship between Maria
Inés and Alejandro continues to grow. Daniela y Ignacio se discuten. Marcos
threatens Paulina with a knife; he wants, and gets, money.
Rosario tells
Paulina that she still hasn’t had the nerve to look at herself in the mirror
and has not let her husband see her. Maria Inés and Alejandro argue. Ignacio
has a heart attack and decides to go back to Maria Inés; then Marcella tells
him that Daniela is pregnant. Ignacio returns to his home to recuperate and
talks with Maria Inés; he tells her he had hoped to return to her but now that
Daniela is pregnant....; she asks him if he really expected her to be there. He
warns her that her relationship with Alejandro can’t last. Maria Inés and Alejandro
reconcile. Marcella tries to get him into bed but fails. Mónica asks ? to make
love to her. Nícolas and Adriana continue to argue about money.
Adriana has a
miscarriage and returns home. Maria Inés becomes angry with Alejandro when he
appreciates a young, beautiful woman. Consuelo’s husband arrives. Marcella becomes obsessed with Alejandro and
begins to act like most novela villains. Rosario has finally seen herself and
gone into a deep depression. Andrés marries Ivana and is rejected by Mamalena
and his father because Ivana is black. Ignacio takes back the apartment he had
given to Andrés. Consuelo seems disposed to return to her husband, although her
friends tell her not to. Nicolas has begun to drink heavily. Andrés and Ivana
move back home. Marcella becomes increasingly obsessed; Alejandro can’t get rid
of her ... until after she shows up at his apartment: he tells her to go to his
bed and undress but as she starts, he says no --- he still has some respect.
Marcella tells Daniela she realizes she behaved horribly and is determined to
get back her self-respect. Mónica is raped after going to a party with Andrea,
a party forbidden by her father. Mamalena worries that the news will get
around. All the family support her, but nobody takes her to a doctor or tells
the police, although Fernando and her brother search for the culprit. Mónica
becomes even more crazy than before. Alejandro and Maria Inés reconcile.
Marcella obtains Alejandro’s forgiveness; tells him that he is the first man
she has ever loved.
Mónica is raped,
then discovers that she is pregnant. I think her father wants her to have an
abortion, Mamalena wants her to get married. She finally tells her family that
she has decided to have the child, to try to make something good of something
bad, and to raise the child herself. Both her father and grandmother object.
Alejandro insists that Maria Inés continue with divorce proceedings, but
Ignacio objects: he tells Alejandro that he, like Daniela, will resent being
tied to an older woman and that Maria Inés will realize that she cannot be
happy with a younger man (as he could not find real happiness with a younger
woman). To get her back, Ignacio threatens her: he will no longer pay her bills
for anything and he will return to HIS house. Doña Felisa dies and none of her
children come to the funeral.
Mónica has an
abortion. Maria Inés tells her children what Ignacio has done; they don’t
believe her. Then they go to see him and without prompting, he admits that he
has canceled her credit cards, checking account, etc. They are furious.
Francisco tells Ignacio that he and Rosario will help Maria Inés find a lawyer
because what Ignacio is doing is wrong. Maria Inés and Alejandro meet with the
new lawyer. Ignacio later tries talking to Adriana, lawyer to lawyer, but she
rebuts each and everyone of his arguments. Ignacio leaves town and almost
crashes his car. He talks to his lawyer, telling him that he can’t return
Ignacio’s wife or family. He arranges to talk with his family and confesses to
Adriana that he was responsible for Nicolas’s losing his job, then confesses to
Andrés that he kept his CD from being played by any radio station. Alone with
Maria Inés, he tells her he will give her a divorce, divide their property as
long as she agrees not to marry Alejandro. She refuses his terms. Mónica,
Andrés and Adriana tell Ignacio they can live without him, their mother is
enough.
Maria Inés
convinces Ivana and Nicolas to return to their spouses, to accept her help and
live in their house. They agree. Alejandro is offered two jobs: replacing
Marcella who had decided to leave the country or going to Italy on a 3-yr
contract. He tells Maria Inés about the first but not the second. She meets
with Marcella to see if this is just another trick but Marcella apologizes to
her and convinces her.
In the gym,
Maria Inés overhears two women talking about the fact that Marcos has AIDS. She
tells Alejandro and Andrés who goes for a test and learns that he is negative.
She tries to get hold of Paulina who is going off to Cancún with somebody for
the weekend but doesn’t succeed.
Finally, she and Alejandro confront Paulina. From flashbacks, it appears
that Marcos beat and raped her one day (anal intercourse?) and she assumes that
is when she was exposed. She takes the blood test and authorizes Maria Inés to
get the results. The latter does and they are positive. At first Paulina
refuses to believe the results, she acts irrationally. Alejandro and Maria Inés
try to comfort her. Then she doesn’t want either to tell Rosario or Consuelo,
but as soon as they meet for a planned dinner, she blurts out the truth ... but
she refuses to take additional tests or visit a specialist. Meanwhile, Mamalena
has arranged a dinner for her grandchildren and their father. It starts out
badly but gets better, especially when they contrive to, and succeed in, making Mamalena drunk. Andres’s record is
played on the radio. Alejandro begs Maria Inés never to stay with him out of a
sense of sacrifice; he worries about being yet another burden to her -- -but it
is clear that he is thinking about the job in Italy.
Paulina sees
another specialist and the results are confirmed: she is HIV + but does not yet
have aids. She tells Fernando who becomes worried about Rosario’s health if she
maintains her friendship. Paulina asks Maria Inés to tell her children and she
does. Consuelo gets ready to go back home, now a working woman able to support
herself and her children. Mamalena plans to leave Mexico, and the shame of her
family’s doings, in a week. Ivana is shocked to learn that Andrés was lovers
with Paulina before they met and could have given her HIV if he had contacted
it. Ignacio tries one last time to convince Maria Inés and Alejandro not to wed
but fails. However, it is clear that she feels odd about telling Alejandro to
rent the house he has selected for them. She remembers how she and Ignacio
chose their first and only home. When Paulina tells her ex-husband Javier that
she is HIV+, he insists that 1) they tell the children that she has cancer and 2)
that he take the children immediately to protect him. She agrees!
Ignacioi and
María Inés tell their children the divorce is final but both will always be
there for their children. Mamalena goes to live in the U.S. Consuelo returns to
the U.S. and her job. Paulina develops a serious heart problem and dies in the
hospital, with Maria Inés at her side. Adriana announces her pregnancy.
At their
engagement party, María Inés learns from Alejandro’s son that he gave up a job
in Italy for her. She also tells Rosario that she feels trapped, out of
control. So she tells all the guests that the engagement is off and talks to
Alejandro. He tries to talk her out of
it and cries a lot. Then, right before leaving, he tells the story of his dog
(a standing joke throughout the novela):
The dog story
transcribed by sueef: There is one part of a sentence that I'm not sure of but
here goes: ¿Sabes qué? Yo tenía un perro. "Nixon" se llamaba. Era
Maria Ines
compared herself to an anchor...one that was holding Alejandro back. The dog
would never wag its tail so is that more anchor symbolism? Sue
Alejandro
means....by Lizy - that his dog will never do what Maria was doing to him. He
was the sail and Maria thinks she is an anchor for that sail, but Ale did not
thinks the same. And he questions why does a " barco recien pintado"
has an anchor.
A year later, he
turns up at her house and they talk (Ignacio is alone and bitter, he can see
his child but Daniela wants to raise it alone; Mónica sees Fernando from time
to time; Mamalena is still in the U.S. and criticizes her for not going back to
Ignacio, etc. She explains why she had to give him up: she’s at the end of her
life, he’s at the beginning of his. He says he understands that she didn’t want
to be burdened with yet another family), but she doesn’t let him stay. As she
watches him drive away, she daydreams that he runs back to her and kisses her,
but he doesn’t. Then we see her walking through her empty house alone and
standing outside on the balcony. Some time later, she is in a travel agency
with a slimmed-down Mónica booking a flight, first class, to San Francisco. In
the same agency is Alejandro, booking a flight to Italy. He sees her, she sees
him: Eres tu? Eres tu?. Alejandro dice “somos tu y you” and they smile and hold
hands.
EL FIN is a poem by Octavio Paz.
EL FINAL:
[rinconlatino.com]
At the end of
this great story we find a Maria Ines who decides to break up her relationship
with Alejandro because she thinks that she is an obstacle in his career.
Alejandro has a job offer in Italy but he did not tell this to Maria because he
thought she will prefer to stay in Mexico. But Alejandro's son told about the
offer to Maria and in their engagement celebration she told Ale she want to
stay alone. This chapter was full of emotion and with very realistic conversations
between them. Ale cried, but finally he went to Italy and they present an
encounter between them in a travel agency where they seem to be very happy of
that casual meeting. The author left to your imagination the future of this
beautiful love story, so you can imagine what you want. In the forum of Mirada
all the people agree they stay together after that encounter, but without a
marriage, just living each day....
