(I strongly recommend that you not read these before you have seen the novela.)
USA, 12/18-20/06 - FIRST THREE EPISODES
General Comment: the major characters and major themes (growing older, infidelity, friendship, family, love and sex) are all introduced.
HIGHLIGHTS: In the first episode we meet María Inés, middle-aged, well-to-do, wife and mother. Her children, two girls and a boy are almost grown up. Mónica, the youngest girl, is slender and doesn’t seem to eat enough, but her mother doesn’t suspect that, as we find out, she is a bulimic. Her older daughter is studying to be a lawyer and is having an affair with a fellow student. The oldest son is dedicated to music, something that doesn’t please his father.
Ignacio, Maria’s husband, is having a affair with a younger woman.
Maria has lunch with her two best friends: Rosario and Paulina. It is Paulina’s 45th birthday, but depending on whom she is talking to (the waiter, her ex-husband, who walks by), her age varies from about 38 to 44. Indeed, she half-jokingly tells Maria that their friendship with end if MI mentions “45” again. Paulina’s been married twice: her first husband left her for a 20-year-old, her second left her for a 30-year-old. (To which I can only say that they must have been blind.) She is currently having an affair with her aerobics instructor, a much younger man.
We also meet Alejandro, a rather disorganized, disheveled man who is probably in his 30s. He appears to be a single father on good terms with his ex (we hear him on the phone saying he will send a check to cover something or other; no arguments or nasty comments). He has a neighbor who puts milk outside his door. We don’t see her but can tell from their conversation through the apartment walls and out on the balcony that they are friendly, and that she is probably an older woman.
MI visits her mother, an experience not at all pleasant (and, one guesses, that the relationship has always been strained). Her mother appears to prefer MI’s sister, although I’m not sure why. Somehow the subject of infidelity comes up. Her mother says that she doesn’t think her husband, now dead, ever cheated on her but she wouldn’t be surprised if he had. All men of a certain age do.
Somewhere in the episode, Ignacio and MI have drinks with another couple. The slightly drunk Ignacio starts talking about how beautiful MI was when they me, how tiny her waist was, etc., etc. It is an incredibly cruel string of “compliments” and a clearly distraught MI tells him that he is talking of her as if she no longer existed.
Mónica overhears her father talking on the phone with Daniela. I’m not sure how much she overheard, but it is enough to upset her. She throws a tantrum when her car doesn’t start, and when her mother takes her in her car, Mónica tells her that she doesn’t pay enough attention to her father.
Ignacio tells MI he has to go on a short business trip; she insists on packing for him.
Ignacio and his lover Daniela are supposed to meet at the airport. MI drives him there and chases after him to give him an envelope he had left in the car. She walks right by Daniela who saw her just in time. MI doesn’t notice Ignacio’s distraction as he tries to signal to Daniela. Paulina is at the airport saying good bye to some man when she sees Ignacio and Daniela kiss. (I’m not sure if this is when the two were leaving or returning.)
Nicolas visits Alejandro in his apartment. In the living room/bedroom a young woman is asleep under a bedcover. They don’t know each other, but Alejandro is looking for a student to help him with an article about a labor strike of some kind. It somehow involves Ignacio. Later, his son Alex comes to visit and Alejandro wakes up his lover and shoves her into the bathroom. Alex, however, is pretty sharp ... especially when he finds a pair of nylons. He asks his father if he loves her or is going to marry her. Alejandro hedges: he loves her but, well, marriage is something that requires much thought. He does introduce the two as the woman leaves.
While MI is unpacking packing Ignacio’s suitcase, she asks him when was the last time they made love. He gets angry, says if she can’t remember when it was, it isn’t important. He reminds her that they’ve been married for 30 years. She asks if she matters at all to him, if he thinks of her as a woman. He says they are husband and wife, live together, etc. She interrupts: he doesn’t touch her. He gets angry; this isn’t the right time to discuss such things. She asks him if he has another woman; he asks if she has another man. She replies “of course not”. A bit later, as she dresses, he complains about her makeup.
In Ignacio’s study, Adriana and Nicolas ask Ignacio a legal question (or, rather, Adriana does the asking, not letting Nicolas get a word in edgewise) relating to Alejandro’s story. It has to do with a labor union’s giving up certain rights in exchange for certain benefits. Ignacio says that is can’t be done; businesses can’t change the law. And changing the law would take forever. (I think Adriana and Nicolas had been debating this point and Nicolas had been wrong.) Nic asks Ignacio if he knows Alejandro and explains how the question came up. Ignacio is familiar with the name but doesn’t think much of him.
In a restaurant, MI overhears some women talking about their children and husbands who don’t pay attention to them. One woman wonders if her husband is cheating on her; the other says “probably”. The first remarks that it is hard for a man to want a woman who has gained a lot of wait (due to some pills she must take).
Mónica sees her father about to make a call and asks who’s he calling. He lies, says it is Francisco. He notices something odd about her. She asks if he loves her, says that her sister is more important. He insists that he loves them all. She asks if he loves her mother. He wonders why she is asking all these questions. She says that she doesn’t want to hate him or her. She walks off. He follows and asks what she meant. She just says something like “because I’d rather die”.
In a beauty salon, MI hears two women gossiping. MI’s hairdresser makes some comment about a 40-year-old. As MI pays, she overhears a woman asking the hairdresser if that is MI San Millan. She looks so old, and has gotten so fat. MI leaves. When she gets home, she asks her maid if she seems old. Elvia says that she is 50 and the mother of 3. MI says that she isn’t yet 50 and asks Elvia her age. I think Elvia answers “56”. Then MI asks Elvia if she felt different when she turned 50, as if some stage of her life had ended. Elvia doesn’t understand. (We all know, of course, that the working class do not suffer these crises of identity.) MI says that she is siempre mama, siempre esposa, siempre hija - nunca “MI”. Elvia again doesn’t understand.
Paulina meets Rosario in a restaurant where Alejandro is eating with his son. Paulina knows Alejandro and introduces the two. Rosario has a slice of pie; Paulina doesn’t: “calories”. Paulina later tells Rosario what she saw at the airport. Rosario can’t believe it. Paulina is sure and asserts that the woman in question was obviously not a simple adventure. Paulina thinks she should tell MI; Rosario says not to. She may be wrong. Paulina thinks men need to be confronted. That night, Rosario tells her husband Francisco who assures her that it can’t be true. However, later that evening (after dinner with MI and Ignacio), it turns out that Francisco does, indeed, know about the relationship and warns Ignacio. Indeed, Ignacio excuses himself shortly after he arrives and calls Daniela. Francisco follows him and tells him that Paulina knows. Francisco reminds him that he is 60; he should leave the young woman. Ignacio says it is precisely because he is 60 that he won’t. When the two return, somehow the subject of the house in Cuernavaca comes up again. Ignacio wants to sell it: nobody goes there anymore, it costs a lot to keep it staffed, then there are the taxes, utilities, etc. MI reminds him that the house means a lot to her.
In her apartment, Daniela and her friend Marcela argue about her relationship with Ignacio. Marcela reminds her that Ignacio is married and is also much older than she is. Marcela asks how long she will wait, until Ignacio gets tired of her and exchanges her for a younger woman.
Dec. 20, 2006 - Much arguing in Maria’s household. She and Ignacio fight once more about the house in Cuernavaca when she tries to get her children to go there on a short holiday.
The marital bed: He asks if she wants to make love. She responds, quite accurately, that he asks as if it were a chore.
Andrés and his mother go to Cuernavaca. They talk about Ignacio’s wanting to sell the house. Maria decides that she will not permit it.
Alejandro visits, without warning, Paulina who is wearing a face mask. He wants her to get him into a political event so he can interview Ignacio who has refused to talk with him. Alejandro notes that Paulina doesn’t like Ignacio. She says that his wife is her best friend but stops before spilling the beans.
Ignacio, thinking he is alone in the house, calls Daniela; Mónica picks up the phone and hears the two talking. He visits Daniela and they argue. He insists that it is only his children who keep him with Maria. He can’t abandon them. She is upset, tells him that they are almost grown and will understand. He asks her to understand his situation. She tells him to leave; she has a busy day planned.
MI meets Paulina in an outdoor restaurant. A man seems to be watching them. A waiter brings them a bottle of win from the man watching them. Paulina refuses, tells him that she’s looking for a millionaire who will give her jewels not alcohol that will make her fat. Paulina, with some reluctance, tells MI what she saw at the airport. Paulina insists that the woman didn’t look like a pickup. Paulina tells MI that she had to tell her. MI, shocked, rushes away from the table, gets into her car and cries.
MI talks to Rosario, says that it would explain Ignacio’s behavior for many years. MI asks Rosario if she and Francisco still have relations. Rosario says “of course” but over time, it changes. Rosario asks when MI and Ignacio last made love. MI remembers exactly: twice in the past year,. Once in Cuernavaca when he was drunk; once after he signed an important contract. And both times she felt ?. Rosario tries to comfort her as MI adds that Paulina said the other woman was young. MI wonders about the woman. Rosario says a woman who goes out with a married man can’t be much. Then she suggests that MI talk with Ignacio to clarify matters. MI is afraid that he will admit it; then what would she do? Then MI relays her mother’s advice about men, that they all stray. And she tells Rosario that she found a condom in her husband’s clothes. MI wonders if it is her fault or if it all men cheat. When Rosario asks her if she still loves Ignacio, she admits that, in this moment, when she is losing him, she loves him with all her heart.
Daniela goes to work; it’s an impressive office. Her secretary Raquel tells her that San Millan called twice.
Daniela visits Francisco at his office. Ignacio introduces her warmly to Francisco. After she leaves, Francisco admits that she surprised him and guesses, correctly, that this is not a trivial relationship. Ignacio says it is much more serious than Francisco may think.
SPECIFIC COMMENT: Although the novela is primarily about a middle-aged woman’s finding herself, it becomes clear in the first couple of episodes that MI is not the only one suffering a mid-life crisis. Her husband, Ignacio, is, too. And Paulina, one of MI’s best friends, fights growing older with everything that is within her. Ignacio’s lover doesn’t want to fully acknowledge the age difference between her and Ignacio. Yes, he is likely to die before she does but lots of young people die, too, and lots of couples evenly matched in age break up. Rosario and Francisco appear to be the ideal couple: deeply in love and comfortable with themselves. Mónica is spoiled. Adriana is strong. Andrés is trying to find himself. And the three, in spite of the fact that they are all practically adults, still fight with each other as if they were young children.
12/21/06 - In Alejandro’s apartment, Paulina tells him about the Sn Millan family and emphasizes that he can do what he wants to Ignacio but not to touch MI.
MI’s house: preparations for the dinner. MI tells her mother about her suspicions. The dinner: bastante incomodo. MI says barely a word. When Ignacio raises yet again the matter of selling the house in Cuernavaca, MI says her first words: she wants to him to tell her first because she doesn’t like his surprises. Adriana accuses her mother of never doing anything for her and, especially now, not trying to impress Nic’s parents. After the party, MI asks Ignacio if he wants a separation. He says that he’s 60 years old and has lived half his life with her; it is too late to change. Then she tells him that the reason he wants to get rid of the Cuernavaca house is because that is the only place where the two of them would be alone. She reminds him that she is still a woman with a body, that she hasn’t forgotten that she sleeps next to a man.
In their home, Francisco tells Rosario that Ignacio’s affair is serious.
MI overhears her 3 children arguing in the kitchen about her and Ignacio. Adriana defends her behavior as the result of menopause; the other two defend their father. MI cries silently.
In contrast to MI and Ignacio, Francisco and Rosario have a romantic “goodbye” as he heads off to work.
MI goes to the beauty salon and asks for something different: hair, fingernails, makeup. She looks in the mirror and, like the witch in Snow White, asks: Mirror, mirror: is there somebody más bella que yo..
In a restaurant, Daniela asks Ignacio “how much longer”? He says she has to understand. It isn’t easy. She tells him that they’ve been together for two years; this is the first time that she has felt like his lover. Crying, she starts to leave the table but he stops her. Then he reminds her that he could be his father. He feels that he is cheating her. She says his age doesn’t matter to her; she wants to marry him. He says it is too late for him. She replies that that is solely an excuse not to change. He tells her that in 10 years, she will just be 40 and he will be an old man.
In the beauty salon, MI is pleased with her new look and promises to follow the hairdresser’s advice. He tells her that she looks younger. She asks if she is beautiful; he tells her that she has always been beautiful. She says that she must be young.
Alejandro sits down at a bar where Paulina has just ordered a drink. He asks her if she is waiting for anybody; she responds with the same question. They briefly pretend to be lovers getting together. He is surprised that she is alone. She asks him what friendship means to him, would he tell a friend something that would hurt. He says it depends. If a friend were fat, he wouldn’t say anything because nothing could be done. “But what if it would change somebody’s life”, she asks. A - “For good or bad?” P - “I don’t know”. Paulina explains: a friend’s husband is unfaithful.
12/22/06 - missed first 15 mins.
In the gym Paulina tells Rosario that she did the right thing by telling MI, that she wishes somebody had done the same for her (Javier had been cheating for 3 years). Rosario says that Ignacio will/did deny it, and MI will believe him. Paulina expands: the first time it happened for lack of experience; the second time because she didn’t think it would happen a second time. While exercising, the two women argue about who ages best: men or women. Rosario insists that some older women do look younger than younger men. Rosario asks an intimate question: how did Paulina avoid stretch marks? Paulina says “creams, lots of creams”.
Andrés invites his mother to watch him play - and cheers her up.
Ignacio returns home for some papers and notices that MI is still in her pj’s - the first time in 30 years. She says she will do it more often, it that is what it takes to get his attention.
In a restaurant, Alejandro and the female journalist chat, although Alej seems to do most of it. MI and Andrés enter. Alejandro watches them come in. A waiter tells Alej that the young man is Andrés San Millan; Alej tips him to find out who the woman is. MI overhears him telling his companion about macho men. He comments that among humans, women are prettier. As is his wont, he goes on and on and on about women taking over the world - while swearing that he isn[’t a macho. MI can’t help but smile. The music starts; lots of young people stand up and sway and clap to the music. Then MI signals the waiter to say something to her son and walks out. Alejandro follows her and outside apologizes to her, if he upset her. He tries to introduce himself, but she stops him. He hails a car, she gets in without saying a word. He says goodbye as the taxi starts to pull away; then she offers him a “buenas noches”. When she gets home, her duaghter demands to know where she was. And when MI says that she went to hear Andrés play, Adriana says “but that’s a place for young people”. MI says that youth isn’t contagious. Adriana still thinks it is stupid. Then Adriana continues with her criticisms: she argues with her husband over nothing, interrupts conversations she shouldn’t, etc. MI asks/says “symptoms of menopause?”. As MI leaves Adriana’s room, she reminds her that her wedding anniversay is the next day. And she wants to have a special, private dinner. Adriana likes the idea. It is the 27th. When MI asks for a kiss, Adriana acts as if she had never kissed her mother before but, shyly, she kisses MI’s cheek.
MI finds Ignacio asleep in front of the TV and wishes him a happy anniversary.
Adriana talks to Mónica about the arrangements for MI’s surprise, and private, dinner.
The next day: even the maid will get the night off. MI plans to make the entire dinner herself. MI tells Andrés that he was wonderful, but the place was not for her.
At the end of the day, in his office, Ignacio calls Daniela and arranges to see her.
That evening: MI puts the final touches on the dining table: candles, flowers, etc. In her room, she puts on jewelry and, a final touch, perfume. She returns to the dining room, looks again at her watch, lights the candles and turns off the lights. She stands and smiles. Then we see the candles almost burned down. MI is aslee in her chair. She wakes. Chimes are ringing. She looks at her watch., stands up and blows out the candles.
12/25/06 - Ignacio arrives hom, sees the table, remembers the date. He walks into the bedroom and apologizes. He had an important meeting and his secretary forgot to remind him this was his anniversary. MI makes a snide comment about her not needing a secretary to remember. She tells him that his present is on the night table; he, of course, does not have one for her. She starts an argument that he doesn’t want to participate in. She asks him if he loves her. He avoids a direct answer (“you are the mother of my children”, we’ve been married many years”, etc.). She calls him on his evasion.
The next day, there is a tense family dinner. Mónica leaves the table. MI makes light of the fact that Ignacio forgot the anniversary.
At school, a friend of Mónica’s tells her that the only reason her parents have not divorced is because she makes sure they know they have to take care of her. Shortly thereafter, Mónica is in a minor car crash. At the hospital, a doctor tells MI and Ignacio that Mónica is suffering from malnutrition and anemia. They are surprised but don’t seem to take the news very seriously. The doctor recommends treatment.
MI dresses for Paulina’s reception as Alejandro does the same.
USA, 12/26/06 - At Paulina’s party, Paulina introduces Alej to MI. Alej talks briefly with Ignacio who is all but rude. Alej can’t stop looking at MI. Ignacio calls (or takes a call from) Daniela who is crying and is very upset. Alej joins MI as she walks on the balcony outside, and they introduce themselves yet again. In fact, Ale introduces himself twice. MI rejoins her female friends - upon whom Alej intrudes and, as usual, runs off at the mouth. He makes a long joke about how his wife left him; MI laughs. Her other friends at first don’t. MI asks what happened (after his wife left him for an older man); he says that the man left her for a younger woman. He also admits to watching telenovelas. Semi-seriously, he asks why the novelas don’t tell stories like his: men who are abandoned by their wives and lose their children. Don’t men, too, have the right to cry.? Francisco tells Ignacio that he should not treat a journalist like Alej that way. MI asks Alej how he feels about his wife. Alej admits that he loved her. Paulina joins MI and Alej; the other women leave. Paulina asks MI how she would feel being married to a Secretary; MI insists that Ignacio isn’t at all interested in a government posiiton and repeats a rather negative opinion of Ignacio’s about government (or the government). MI and Alej talk alone briefly; Ignacio notices them. As Alej and MI part, he reminds her of their previous meeting. She doesn’t remember at first. Then she remembers and tells him that she was at the music club because of her son. Ignacio joins them briefly.
Back home, Ignacio fixes himself a drink, and MI tries to make small talk. She asks him what is wrong. He says he is tired, tells her to check on the children. He makes a snide remark about Andrés “your son”; MI asks why the “your”.
The rain outside causes Ignacio to recall the first time he met Daniela. In the middle of a rainstorm, he gave her refuge in his car. She had a cold.
MI mentions that Francisco and Rosario are taking a vacation alone; she tries to interest him in doing the same, with her. He gets up and goes to the refrigerator. She follows and says “that’s the problem, isn’t it? You don’t want to be alone with me?” He says he is tired. She tells him that it is as if he had hit her. She reminds him of a kiss. He recalls it, too. She saus that she wants to feel like a woman again. He walks out.
Mónica hears her father’s car, goes into the dining room and asks her mother if she and her father are having problems. MI assures her that they aren’t.
In his bedroom, Nic and Adriana share a pizza. He jokes about her father wanting to know his intentions. Adriana wants to marry but not until they have established their careers. They talk about the proper role of women in society. It starts out with a joshing tone but then becomes serious. When she talks about how men are always allowed to cheat while women are not; he asks how she would feel if her mother had a lover. Adriana says that could never happen.
In their king-size bed, MI and Ignacio lie on opposite sides, saying nothing.
The next day, Daniela asks Ignacio to tell her that he loves MI. He can’t. Then she asks him to say he doesn’t love her. He says he does. She asks him to stay with her. She is on the verge of tears as is he. He tells her it was an illusion, a beautiful dream. So, she asks, what is reality: a man and woman sharing a bed and a house as a pair of strangers? He says that it is his reality. He tells her that for him love is a problem, “un estorbo”; her love has solely made him realize how old he is. He tells her their love will be a wonderful memory; she doesn’t want it to be a memory, wants it to be real. She asks him if he can live without love. She thanks him for all he taught her; but he didn’t teach her how to live without him. They embrace. He pulls himself away and walks out the door.
