9/24-28/01. Cecilio arrives at the seminary. Un año despues. The seminarians
rehearse in the chapel. Juan does repairs. Gertrudes insists on talking to
padre Cervantes and demands that he pay her; he is 5 months behind. She demands
that he write a check, even though he tells her he doesn’t have enough funds to
cover the check. She tells her bird that now she has him and later talks to her
lawyer: the check is the leverage she needs to get back the land the church
has. Cecilio starts his invention for ringing the church bell automatically but
gets caught by the rope and dangles high above the ground. José offers to buy
piñatas from Francisca to help her pay for dancing lessons, but she refuses.
She lives with her sister Hortensia and her sister’s husband Antonio who is
drinking a lot and treats both his wife and son poorly. José gathers all the
men in the village to hold a blanket into which Cecilio can fall; first,
however, they catch Abel who had tried to help Cecilio. Then they catch
Cecilio. At their meal, padre Cervantes reprimands Cecilio. This is not the
first invention that has gone bad. What the seminary needs is a miracle: it has
only 12 students versus the 50 it used to have. In the chapel, one of the
seminarians hears a baby cry. Florencio
is worried about his wife Ester’s health. The seminarians name the baby Juan de
Luz. Antonio leaves his family to go to the U.S. Florencia, happy when his wife
and children recover, gives padre Cervantes a blank check to pay all his debt.
The seminarians decide to raise the baby. Mirna, who works for Gertrudis, has
extra milk. Gertrudis is furious when she discovers this, and the fact that
Mirna has been taking bread to the seminary. Padre Cervantes holds a service to
give thanks for the money and the baby. Gertrudis arrives, says he owes her
money and is planning to sell the baby. Nobody believes her.
6 years pass.
Juan lives with the seminarians and is also cared for by Mirna. Francisca is
teaching dance classes. Justino, Gertrudis’ lawyer, tells her of another
business opportunity and decides to join the dance class as part of a plan, I
think. Francisca says no. In spite of the padre’s objections that they don’t
have enough money to put on the pastorala, Cecilio and the other seminarians
proceed with rehearsals with the children. Cecilio makes an invention to clean
clothes that results in destroying them. Gertrudis has a plan: adopt Juan de
Luz to hurt padre Cervantes. For that she needs a husband and proposes to
Justino. He asks for time to consider it. Then he tries again to approach
Francisca but is again rejected. Florencio, for some reason, doesn’t want his
children participating. Justino accepts the proposition of Gertrudis on the
condition that the marriage will be annulled after Juan is adopted. Gertrudis
also makes a proposition: that he address her by “tu”. Mirna tells padre
Cervantes that Gertrudis is up to something. Cecilio’s paint invention ends up
covering everybody in paint and when he sees that some chemicals or something
clean it up, he realizes that nobody will believe him. Justino and Gertrudis
are married; he is surprised to discover it is por bienes separados. Juan de
Luz becomes sick but the doctor says it is nothing and he seems to recover
quickly. Francisca tells her dance class that padre Cervantes needs money and
all chip in. The padre relents and decides to let them have the pastorela.
Gertrudis y Justino present padre Cervantes with the adoption papers for Juan
de Luz.
USA, 10/1-5/01.
Francisca and others decide to talk with Justino to find out how Gertrudis got
custody of Juan de Luz. Justino insists he had nothing to do with the adoption,
just handles business matters for Gertrudis, doesn’t mention that he has
married her. Francisca doesn’t know whether to believe him. The boy escapes and
goes back to the seminary. Gertrudis calls the police and accuses Padre
Cervantes of kidnapping the boy. Padre Cervantes tells Juan to try to win the
love of Gertrudis. Abel visits Gertrudis and begs her to let the boy visit
padre Cervantes. Juan has a nose bleed but nobody notices until the next day
because of a party at which José hits Justino for attending. Hermano Cecilio
invents something like a walkie talkie and the children show it to their father
Florencio. Don Jesús takes flowers to Gertrudis and asks her to make peace with
Padre Cervantes, but she refuses. Gertrudis receives a letter from her mother,
sent after her death, with a statute of the Virgin. Her mother asks her
forgiveness for opposing her marriage to an older man. Gertrudis tells Cruz to
destroy the statute. Gertrudis calls Justino and asks why she hasn’t seen him
in several days. Karina and Juan de Luz give clothes away. Cruz is furious when
he discovers what she did. Cruz can’t burn the statue; Juan de Luz finds it and
puts it in his room. Gertrudis calls Justino to find out where he has been; she
leaves a message on his answering machine while he reads a book. Don Jesús visits
Gertrudis and begs her to let Juan de Luz attend the Christmas party. He thinks
he has her agreement and tells the pueblo. José apologizes to Francisca for his
behavior, gives her a ring and asks her to marry him. Justino watches them from
afar, is happy when she rejects the ring, sad when they kiss. José asks her to
keep the ring as a Christmas present. Francisca tells her sister she doesn’t
love José, admits that she is attracted to Justino. Justino visits Gertrudis,
reminds her that their marriage is a secret. She tells him about the letter she
received from her mother. He becomes loving when she wonders to whom her mother
would have left her entire fortune. Gertrudis offers to return Rayito to the
seminary in exchange for the land. One of the seminarians prevents Padre
Cervantes from signing the contract without further investigation. Hortensia
tells Francisca that Justino interests her because he dances well, whereas José
is clumsy. But she says a good dancer isn’t necessarily a good lover and tells her
that appearances can be deceptive. Gertrudis and Justino offer to return Juan
de Luz to Padre Cervantes if he signs papers turning over the seminario’s land
to her. He is about to sign when Abel stops him, says there is no guarantee the
officials will agree, that they should wait and study the document. Padre
Cervantes tells Gertrudis he will think it over. Oscar gets on a bus to go to
San Antonio to find his father Antonio (he learned he was there from a dream he
had). Gertrudis has Justino investigate Abel. Justino visits a night club and
talks to a singer who know Abel before he entered the seminary. In spite of
requests from just about everybody in the pueblo, Gertrudis refuses to let Juan
de Luz perform. However, she arranges a special Christmas eve dinner with
Justino and while she is with him, Mirna and Cruz take Juan de Luz to the
church. During the performance, he faints.
USA,
10/8-12/01. GRAN FINAL 10/19. Rayito
recovers. Dr. Domingo is called (not in the pueblo); it worries him. Oscar’s
mother worries about him. Catalina, his old novia, arrives in the pueblo and
talks to Abel, refuses to tell him how she located him. She tells him she has
just gotten a divorce, needs the help of a friend. Gertrudis kissees Justino.
He rejects her, says he agreed only to be her friend. Gertrudis kicks him out.
Justino visits Francisca, tells her that Oscar will be found. She asks him to
leave and he kisses her goodbye. Justino insists he will work for Gertrudis for
only a short time more, that he never acted in bad faith. Gertrudis opens the
gift that Justino left for her and is touched. Padre Cervantes asks Abel about
Catalina, hopes she really is in his past.
Carmenita, hermana de Oscar, who heard Justino and Francisca, tells her
she doesn’t like Justino. Oscar is found. Justino tells Francisca’s friends
that he wants to be friends. José still doesn’t like or trust him. Florentino’s
children bring an ownerless dog to the house and he agrees to let them keep it,
to the surprise of his wife. Jesús invites Gertrudis to a festival as the guest
of honor but she rejects the invitation. She continues to refuse to let the
doctor examine Rayito, insists that she will take him to the finest hospital.
Florencio agrees to use the computer in his office to put Oscar’s picture on
the internet to find his father. Gertrudis arrives at the scene of another
disaster caused by Cecilio and a new invention. When she helps to free him, she
finds the statute of the Virgin that she had ordered Cruz to burn. Rayito says that he stole the statute.
Gertrudis takes it, and him, back to her house. Cecilio and Padre Cervantes are
arrested for theft. Justino convinces Gertrudis to withdraw the charges.
Catalina tries to give money to the church but Padre Cervantes refusees, tells
Abel it is not wise to accept donations from people outside their juriscition.
Florencio’s dog, Pelusa, gets sick and must go to the vet but recovers. Jesús
advises Francisca that there are different kinds of love, like different kinds
of flowers, that José Niño’s love for her is pure. José Niño sees Justino and
Francisca kissing. Gertrudis doesn’t attend the fiesta and finds Rayito in her
room talking to the Virgin. When he tells her he is cold and hurts, she gives
him an alcohol massage and notices the bruises on his arms and legs. Later, she
listens to the Padre’s sermon and is moved, decides to go to the fiesta where
she finds Justino dancing with Francisca. She drags him away. Jesús welcomes
Gertrudis to the fiesta. Padre Cervantes warns Abel about Catalina, says he is
praying to help him with the decision he must make by midnight. Hortensia tells
Francisca that the argument between Gertrudis and Justino looked like a lover’s
quarrel. After the fiesta, Gertrudis sees Justino walking with Francisca. She
reminds Padre Cervantes he has only to midnight to make the decision. He tells
her he prays that she will see the light. Cecilio and the children sneak into
the house to wish Rayito a Happy New Year. Rayito comforts the crying Gertrudis
after she returns and falls asleep next to her. Catalina calls Justino and
arranges a meeting in which she demands to know what is going on. He tells her
at least part of the story. She agrees to help provided Abel never knows that
Justino is responsible for her being in the pueblo. She is determined to win
him back. . The children and Cecilio drug Gertrudis with some kind of
concoction and handcuff her. Rayito escapes again to the festival. Rayito
returns and tries to unlock the cuffs. When he stands in front of the statute
of the Virgin, a light shines behind him. Gertrudis has him move, the light
leaves, return in front of the statute, the light shines again. She is deeply
affected.
USA,
10/15-19/01. Padre Cervantes signs the contract. Gertrudis visits the church,
tears up the contract, tells the padre about the miracle light. Abel finds
Rayito bleeding on the floor and takes him to the hospital. A crowd gathers at
the church, assumes that Gertrudis hurt Rayito; when she appears, somebody
throws a stone at her. Meanwhile, brother Huerta is having fantasies about
Catalina. Catalina calls Justino and tells him what happened. Dr. Domingo gets
the results: leucemia. Hortensia admits to Francisca that she is interested in
José Niño. Justino takes pastry to Francisca. Gertrudis invites Mirna to go to
the hospital with her. Later she tells Justino she tore up the contract and
will return Rayito to the church. Justino begs her to change her mind, promises
that things will be different. She sends him away. Catalina comforts Abel,
later tells Justino that he can turn Gertrudis back into her old self. Padre
Cervantes holds a special service for Rayito. Gertrudis returns the statute of
the Virgin. All pray in front of it, together and separately at different
times. Francisca accuses José Niño of playing with her sister’s feelings.
Florencio shows Hortensia the letters he’s received in his search for Oscar’s
father, but she doesn’t want her son to see them, doesn’t want to raise false
hopes. Justino takes roses to Gertrudis. Francisca thinks of José Niño, of his
declaration of love. Oscar prays to the Virgin for Rayito, and puts a picture
of his father next to her. That night, his father gets off a bus in the pueblo.
Justino drives Francisca home and frightens her by the way he kisses her. She
finds Hortensia with José Niño and the children and makes some comments. Rayito
overhears the doctor tell Abel that he is dying. Hortensia won’t forgive
Antonio. Florencio offers to find him work. At the market, Hortensia admits to
Francisca that she and José Niño fabricated a relationship to make her jealous,
which it obviously did. Gertrudis tells Justino she wants the adoption stopped
and a divorce; he tries again to change her mind but can’t. She gives him
money. José Niño visits Francisca, says he will give her up and leave the
pueblo....then they reconcile and she admits that she loves him. Carmelito
invites Justino in at just that moment. Oscar asks his sister to forgive
Antonio. Rayito tells Gertrudis he wants to live at the seminary with her,
knows he is dying. Abel is shocked by the doctor’s news, Catalina comforts him,
tells him she will give him children. He tells her he doesn’t love her. Abel
tells Padre Cervantes he must leave the seminary. He feels guilty at not
recognizing the early symptoms of Rayito’s illness. Francisca and Jose Niña
announce their wedding. Gertrudis gives something to Mirna which makes her very
happy, tells Cruz, separately, to marry her (her mother told her they weren’t
married). On returning to her office, Gertrudis spies Justino trying to open
her safe. She starts humming, walks into the office, they talk, she offers him
more money. Then she visits hermano Cecilio and asks for an invention. Padre
Cervantes tells Catalina she isn’t welcome. Rayito dreams that his mother is in
the church. Padre Cervantes and one of the brothers goes there and finds a
woman who says she left her baby in the church 7 years before while fleeing
from the police, was jailed injustly for 7 years. Justino tries to open the
safe that night, after hitting Gertrudis on the head, and Cecilio’s burglar
alarm goes off ( a magnetic device). Justino is arrested. The padre confirms
Lucia’s story: she was unjustly jailed for 7 years but he is most convinced
when she tells him that she left a note with her baby’s name Juan de Luz. He
tells her that her son is dying and takes her to see him.
USA, ULTIMO
CAPÍTULO. Hortensia agrees to be friends with Antonio but tells him to live
elsewhere. He gives her all the money he saved while working in the U.S. She
invites him to dinner and his daughter thanks him for the dress and doll and
embraces him. Cruz tells Mirna why they can’t marry. She is devastated. Padre
Cervantes tells her to forgive Cruz, the marriage was forced, the result of a
youthful error and even though they can’t find the girl there are ways to annul
the marriage. Gertrudis visits Justino in jail, will help him only if he agrees
to a divorce. Rayito can’t feel his legs. The doctor asks Lucia about her past
to try and find a cause for the leucemia; it seems she once worked with
radioactive materials. 2 clowns and all his friends go to Rayito’s room and
dance.Rayito lapses into unconsciousness. All pray for him. Abel gives the
padre what he needs to provide the last rights. Gertrudis tells Cecilio and
Huerto that she hired Catalina to take Abel away from the seminary so Padre
Cervantes would sign the contract and that she asked Justino for money.
Catalina says she did it for love, draws a knife on them. The children sneak
into Rayito’s room with the statute of the virgin. Abel tells Fidel he is going
to stay. Huerta knocks out Catalina. Abel arrives and learns the truth but then
tells her he had already decided to remain a priest. The bells ring calling
everybody to the church. The doctor gives Rayito oxygen, leaves the room. A
light shines on Rayito’s bed. Rayito recovers and runs out of the church into
Abel’s arms. All the people clap and cheer. Time passes and a bus with RAYITO
DE LUZ on the outside pulls into town; the hermanos exit with presents. FIN.
