Su padre, José Maria, está enfermo and is having business problems. Renato is the jealous, millionaire son of a father who killed his wife and then himself in a fit of jealousy when Renato was a young boy. He lives with his aunt and uncle (Andrés and ______) and cousin Gerardo. Malena is Gerardo’s girlfriend and Leonor’s best friend. Aurora is an old family friend, owner of an expensive dress shop, mother of Darío, Leonor’s lover. Sofia and Renato fall in love almost at first sight, but Aurora wants him and does whatever is necessary to interpose herself between the two, before and after their wedding.

From Show Continental 2/97: Leonor conoce a Humberto como “Sofia”. [She chooses Renato].

UNIVISION (http://www.univision.com/content/content.jhtml?cid=160840)

BRIEF SUMMARIES/BREVES AVANCES

First episode:  They are rich but, unknown to them, their father’s business has gone bad. In addition, José Maria is about to have a heart attack (which, of course, he doesn’t know). Inez is the housekeeper. José Maria’s wife is dead. In an antique shop, Sofia sees a young man. Leonore’s friend Malena has arranged a “surprise” party for Leonore with the express purpose of introducing her, at Leonore’s request, to Renato Aramandia, a young, orphaned millionaire who is an attorney who lives with his padrinos, Andrés and Eva, los padres de Gerardo, his best friend, cousin y novio de Malena. Leonor buys a lot of clothes at an expensive shop run by Aurora, mother of Dario (her lover, although the mother doesn’t know it). When Aurora finds cash missing from the register, she questions Amalia, a longtime employee, but only Leonor and Dario had been in the shop. When Renato doesn’t appear at once at the party, Leonor is upset and refuses to join her guests. She is also upset when her father gives her only flowers. When Renato does turn up, he turns out to be the young man Sofia saw in the store and it is clear that he is not attracted to Leonor. When she discovers this fact from Malena she isn’t worried; she has no doubt that she can win him over from her dowdy sister. José Maria visits Aurora to pay her for the clothes and tells her the truth about his business. It’s clear they love each other. Renato learns that he has just received a grant and will go to London in 3 months. His gardener Pedro and maid Luchita are the comic interests. Renato tells Sofia he likes her.

Early episodes: They become novios and Leonor immediately begins a plan to separate them by sending Sofia flowers. Renato is very jealous and doesn’t believe Sofia when she says she doesn’t know who’s sending them. When she meets Renato’s padrinos, Don Andrés tells her that Renato has one serious character flaw, jealousy, but not why (his jealous father killed his wife and then himself when Renato was a young boy). Andrés tells Renato to trust Sofia or to leave her. Malena warns Leonor to be careful because Renato’s father was also jealous. José Maria tells Aurora he would ask her to marry him if his economic situation were better. Leonor tells Darío to accept her conditions (lovers but not novios) or forget her; he accepts. José Maria tells Aurora they must wait because he’s afraid of Leonor’s reaction. The man is a coward. Leonor continues to enflame Renato’s jealousy, at the same time pretending to be her sister’s best friend and his. Claudia, amiga de Darío, turns up in Aurora’s shop asking Darío when he returned from Europe and, for the first time, Aurora suspects that he’s been lying to her. He leaves her home. Renato asks Sofia’s father for her hand; he agrees and then almost has a small heart attack. Don Andrés asks if he marries out of love or jealousy.

On visiting her father’s office, Leonor learns about the business problems from her father’s partner but asks him not to tell her father she knows. Then she tells Sofia...and places an anonymous call to Don Andrés suggesting that the only reason Sofia wants to marry a man whose father called his mother is because her own father is bankrupt (though I hardly see how this will help her get Renato). Sofia tells Renato they must postpone the wedding (because of the financial situation) but not why, and he breaks the engagement. They reconcile and wed. Leonor makes her father promise not to leave her alone by marrying until after she is wed; he agrees. (She swears that nobody will be happy until she has Renato). Sofia and Renato return early from their honeymoon (Renato has rejected his grant, at least for awhile) and they live with her father, who is increasingly weak although he apparently doesn’t know how ill he is. She becomes pregnant. Late in the pregnancy, Leonor tells Darío to arrange an auto accident to kill Sofia, or at least her child. Malena participates in part of the plan (don’t think she knows about the accident) because Leonor knows a secret: some time before Malena left her illegitimate baby on the steps of a church. Aurora discovers that Dario is a thief. Leonor’s father discovers she is responsible for the flowers (she’s started sending them again after the birth of Sofia’s son---and after trying to kill her or the baby) and tells Aurora but makes her promise not to tell Renato. Leonor takes up with Joaquin, a much older man. When she learns her father is dying, she has Darío break into the safe. She learns that Sofia was adopted, tells her father she retracts her promise not to hurt her sister, he has a final heart attack and dies. Leonor asks Renato if an adopted child has the same rights as a real child and learns that the child does, provided it’s been recognized (and Leonor has the papers). Leonor accuses Aurora of being her father’s lover (which isn’t true) and uses that as an excuse to break up with Darío and to keep Aurora away from Sofia. Aurora leaves the country.

Leonor takes up with Humberto (whose sister, Marcela, is in a wheelchair) but tells him her name is Sofia so she can prove to Renato that Sofia has been unfaithful. She tells Joaquin that Sofia is unfaithful. Eventually, Renato believes the lie and throws Sofia out of the house. She goes to live in a boarding house, becomes friends with Teresa, the owner, and is determined to find out who is responsible and to prove her innocence to Renato. Sofia is pregnant again. Leonor manages to convince everybody, including Renato’s padrinos, that Sofia is guilty, not only of adultery but of stealing some jewels from Renato’s padrinos. Renato, Leonor, and Inés leave the house and Mexico without telling Sofia. Gerardo doesn’t believe Sofia is guilty and is determined to discover the truth.

Raquel shoots Delia and flees the room with Ramiro. Sofia enters, picks up the gun and shoots it (of course!) just as Don Jesús enters the room. Sofia, all bloody, flees and takes refuge in a church whose priest is Ifraim and whose housekeeper is Ernestina. She has a miscarriage. She goes to live with Gracianita and Marta(?). Gerardo continues to try and help her. Renato’s padrinos now seem to believe in her innocence.

Next to last episode: Renato returns Sofia’s picture to the gallery and Miguel Angel tells him he loves Sofia. Andrés gets a photo of Ramiro, the man who stole his jewels, and when Malena sees it, she tells Andrés and her father that he is the man who killed Gerardo. Inés doesn’t believe a still-shocked Malena when she tells her Leonor is bad, until she tells Inés that the bad woman who had her give her child away was Leonor. Andrés y Fernando se dan cuenta que Leonor está inmiscuida y van a la policía para acusarla por el asesinato de Gerardo. Cuando Leonor llega a su casa (Fernando’s), Inés la corre porque ya sabe que es una asesina.      Then she tells Fernando about the baby and he finally believes in Leonor’s guilt. Leonor tells Joaquin that Inés is against her because she is Sofia’s real mother; he believes her and takes her to a hotel. Miguel Angel declares his love to Sofia. Humberto tells Judy he loves her. Ramiro tells the police that Leonor planned everything.

Last episode: Joaquin finds Renato’s engagement ring and, later, what she’s done with his money. He rejects her and she tells him that Renato is the only man she has ever loved.
