Jacinto - faithful slave to Xica. kills or maims on command. tortured by the Inquisition in the end but never betrays Xica

Mandinga -Felisberto’s cook, later owned by El Capitan Gonzalo. He is a healer, a whitch doctor and a priest who can communicate with the Orishas (African gods). Has one secret.

Paulo - bought by Xica for José María. bribed by Violante to have sex with José María so she can have the latter burned at the stake. after José María undergoes el baño de boa, Paulo becomes attracted to him. ongoing relationship with José María and Elvira. at the end, they form a triangle, live together, make love together, have many children.

Quiloa - the young slave who is inlove with Xica. He stole the diamonds and was almost killed. he is hiding at the Quilombo but his objective is to save Xica from slavery and run away together. He has one secret. His rebellion is unsuccessful and he loses Xica to Joao. At the end he escapes and takes Rosa with him.

Rosa - “estropajo”. works for Xica. faithful. under torture, and after losing an eye, does betray Xica but is forgiven. in the end, Xica gives her diamonds and sends her away with Quiloa.

Severina - The black woman who welcomed Quiloa into the Quilombo. killed near the end.

THE CALDEIRA DÁBRANTES FAMILY

Clara Caldeira Brant - hermana de Martin e hija del antiguo comendador del Tijuco, quien enloquece luego de ser ultrajada por un regimiento de soldados y vaga desnuda por los alrededores del pueblo. loses her mind, lives by the riverside, cared for by the runaway slaves. becomes “la madre de las aguas”. He has three secrets. conspires with Jacobino to steal diamonds. sells arms to the escaped slaves for diamonds. is killed by María for betraying the slaves

Cielo - his wife. suppiorts him in everything. hates Maria Dolores because she isn’t her real daughter. actually treats all three daughters badly. helps her husband steal diamonds, then conspires with Jacobino, falls in love with Santiago and is betrayed by him. ends up as a drunk at the end.

Isabel - daughter. about 11 years old. she dreams only of getting married. turns into a vampire and disappears from the story when she is sent off to a convent.

María Dolores Gonzalo - the oldest daughter of the captain. she is beautiful, kind and intelligent. hja del Capitán Gonzalo, comandante del regimiento y el único que not iene que obedecer al Comendador. ama a Martín. starts out very meek. is tortured for loving Martín. her child is accused of being the son of the devil. towards the end, becomes strong. finally finds happiness with Martín and escapes with him, Ana, and their baby.

THE CABRAL FAMILY

Sargent Mayor Cabral - opportunistic tyrant, despotic. Married his second wife only for sex (although he rapes Xica as soon as he can) and dislikes their son, who won’t inherit. putty in the hands of his daughter Violante. padre de Violante, Santiago, Javier. su segunda mujer es un joven Micaela. brutal husband. killed by Luis Felipe.

Carlos - hijo de Micaela and Sargent. killed through fault of his father

Luís Felipe - son who returns after being away. nicer than Violante. is attracted to Micaela and becomes her lover. But, near the end of the novela, he kills first his father and then a doctor who blackmails him. He becomes as violent as his father: beating up both Micaela and Violante. is jailed, escapes, returns after Micaela’s death. is condemned to life in Africa.

Micaela - segunda esposa de Sargent Mayor Cabral. a poor peasant girl from an orphanage. never allowed to forget her origins.segunda esposa de Cabral. su hijo Carlos no tiene derechos porque ella no tiene la misma clase como la esposa primera de Cabral. a weeper, weak woman who falls in love with Luis Felipe, convinces him to kill his father. is tortured by Violante, raped daily by a slave bought by Violante for that purpose, prostitutes herself to a guard to help her and Luis Felipe escape from jail. near the end, accidentally killed by a soldier.

Santiago - hijo de Cabral y su primera esposa. odia a Micaela.soldato. se enamora de Elvira. marries a young convent novice without a fortune who doesn’t want to be a nun. ends up happy in his marriage and with ownership of the house.

Violante Cabral - daughter. destructive, despicable, selfish, vicious, deceiftful, etc. She hides her sensual, passionate nature behind a harsh and pious appearance. has some secrets. was engaged to Amadeo. watches him hang. hija de Cabral y su primera esposa. odia a su madrastra Micaela.patrona de Xica y novia de Fernandes, quien declara la guerra a muerte a la esclava y no descansará para mantener al Comendador a su lado. becomes increasingly brutal toward the end, especially in her torture of Micaela. Xica manages to counter most of her moves until the last month or so when Violante gains the upper hand. in the end, does marry Joao in Portugal but is left to live her life alone in a castle, never to see Joao again.

Xavier (Javier) - youngest son. has one secret. hates Micaela at first. soldato. falls for Ursula but engages himself to Isabel. flirts with Ursuala, eventually makes love to her; refuses to marry her in front of the altar. moves in with Xica and takes some of the slaves as lovers. Comendador Joao Fernandez Dóliveira - replaces Comendador Felisberto in the second week. falls for Violante...and Xica

a womanizer who makes love to just about anything in skirts, even the ugly witch Fausta. insists that Xica is his real love. in the end, marries Violante to save Xica’s life but after the ceremony leaves her alone in a castle never to see him again.

? - father. falls for Fátima and makes her his lover. has a child by her. treats Maria de la Gracia badly. I believe he was killed by the Inquisition.

? - mother. supports her husband. also killed, I think, by the Inquisition.

THE CHURCH

Father Aguilar - an old, tolerant priest. very naive when confronting the wickedness of the world.

Father Ubinico? - young priest who comes to the pueblo and becomes the accomplice of Violante. falls in love with Eugenia, tortured by the inquisition, but regains his faith and escapes to another monastery.

Ursula - Aguilar’s niece. she was brought up in a convent until she was kicked out for sexual misconduct. teaches Ana and Isabel how to read and joins in their ranks. she is a magpie who hides her theivery because she does not want to be poor like other orphan girls. She had a lover, but although possessing a hot nature, has other interests in mind right now. Sets her eyes on Javier. provides some of the only humor in the novela and is, mostly, good. but she finds and gives to the comandante the proof that condemns Micaela and Luis Felipe. after several “almost” marriages to Javier, they are finally wed and she seems happy when he, finally, confesses his love for her. but in the last episode, she sets her eyes on Macario.

Viridiana - nun brought in to guard Maria Dolores. psychopathic lesbian. beats MD mercilessly. is finally discovered to be a fake, having killed the real nun. I believe she escapes in the end.

THE TAVERN

Jacobino - Owner of the salon and brothel. He is also the capitan de esclavos and a runaway slave hunter. he is filthy, corrupt and a true barbarian. set in progress the rape of Clara by himself and the soldiers. he has two secrets. participates in the diamond smuggling. kills a doctor and others without compunction. marries Maria Dolores but never touches her. ends up running the brothel with a freed male slave dressed as a woman.

Maria Morena - Jacobino’s slave and only prostitute since he killed Elisa. she has a heart of gold and two secrets. probably the only completely good person in the novela. helps Xica. in the end, falls in love with the new capitan mayor and is kept by him.

THE INN

Bienvenida - seems to be a sweet old lady who takes care of the sick and helps deliver babies. she has two secrets. she practices black magic. uses Eugenia to get blood. plots against Xica with Violante. was the lover of a count. plots against the child of María Dolores. when she dies, her soul enters the body of a goat (thanks to Paolo)

José María - Bienvenida’s grandson. he owns the inn and he also makes money as a hairdresser and wigmaker. he is high-minded, sensitive, amiable and frail (too frail, perhaps). He carries a painful and shameful secret: he is a homosexual. un homosexual simpático y divertido, pero que muchas veces sufre por el desprecio y la marginación a la que lo somete su entorno. marries Elvira to save himself from hanging. Xica’s best friend until he learns he is the grandson of a count. Power goes to his head and causes him to break his friendship with Xica. He must force himself to have relations with Elvira to produce a son or he won’t inherit. recovers his good sense. in the end, they form a family with Paola. Elvira has many children, of different colors.

Elvira - poor, pretty and virtuous, a bad combination. She is desperate to catch a husband and is constantly showing the mole between her breasts to every man she meets. She forms a passion of José Maria and eventually marries him, does everything she can to make José Maria desire her. eventually forms a happy family with José María and Paolo and has children by both men.

Dr. Lourenco - outspoken and open-minded physician. cares for Xica when Violante tortures her in the first week. killed by Jacobino.

Felix - a rought, frank but good-hearted and compassionate merchant. loves María de la Gracia but is tricked into marrying her older sister to whom he can only make love when MG plays the piano. escapes with MG and his child after the Pereira family is arrested and María Joaquina is dying of a tumor.

OTHERS

Bonifacio - one of the soldiers who raped Clara. novio de María Dolores.

Catalina - saved by José María from a fire set by her husband. taken in my Xica. betrays her.

capitan mayor 2 - arrives late in novela. replaces other capitan mayor. has a wife who is suffering from leprosy. José Maria is attracted to him. wife dies. he becomes the accomplice of Violante. rapes Eugenia. falls in love with Maria Morena and gives her a house at the end while being married to Paulina.

Doña Enmerenciana - wife of el Comendador Felisberto. madre de Martín, Paulina and Clara. goes into exile when her husband is punished. seen only in first week.

Elisa - childhood sweetheart of Amadeo. became prostitute but runs away with him when he returns. killed by soldiers in first episode when they are discovered to be smuggling diamonds.

Fauta - arrives in the latter part of the novela. another practitioner of black magic who seduces men, including Joao. Xica has her lips cut off. killed by the Inquistion.

Geremias? - padre de Maria Joaquina and Maria de la Gracia

Macario - one of the soldiers who raped Clara. when he sees her almost naked and crazy, he repents of what he did. works faithfully for Joao. in the final episode appears to be Ursula’s next conquest.

Tomasa - “white” slave bought by Xica.
